Just playing with a few thoughts. Put together a schedule for a basis of starting discussion. It looks a lot better when its in an Excel spreadsheet. Everybody gets five (5) 20 minute sessions. (except the class room instructor, need to work something out there)

First thoughts on the class room instructor time.

1. All class room time doesn't have to be the same instructor. The first classes in the morning and the afternoon could be one instructor and the 2nd group of classes could be a 2nd instructor.

2. Assuming all of the students should be familar with car handling (experience lowspeed autocrossers) we may be able to cut back on some of the class room time.

Instructors get the first session (instructors only) in the morning and the first session after lunch!

Have that for the morning session.

Will have to change it around for the afternoon. I forgot about changing directions in the afternnoon.

Same here. Wasn't the tentative date for this Monday June 20th, 2005?

I dunno if I can make the Nov. 6-7 HPDE but if the one we're doing is getting set for the first day of summer next year, I can start making plans NOW to get my a$$ there!

Remember, the major difference between ODS and Jefferson is that we turn [b]BOTH ways on Jefferson. [:D]

Are you going to try and put people of the same skill level together like NASA HPDE groups? This class going to be offered
to NVCC or NCCC only? Who are the instructors going to be?
This going to be a one or two day event?

Mike,

Since you and Andrej seem to be the key players running this, there should be a meeting setup where this is presented. Something where the logistics involved are discussed, thoughts are pushed around...and mostly by folks that have the level of experience that you guys do...yourselves, woodsie, ralph...
come up with something...give it a shout out to Paul and I..let us banter it around..give you some feedback questions/answers...then start heading it into reality. Sound plausible?

absolutely. Right now it's in the template stage trying to figure out what will and won't work so that when we present to Woodsie, Ralph, Brian Gallagher, we won't get laughed at. Once we have a viable plan, numbers, estimated costs, schedules, then we can present it to you guys to shoot holes in.

Still working a lot of those questions out so don't hold me to it. Just thinking about it, I would say probably mixed skill levels.

At the same time the primary purpose of this is to get people without a NCCC HS license qualified so most of the people in the 'novice' groups will be the first time at a "track" event.

The Group I class will be open to everyone. Instructors will be from NVCC (1st), NCCC (2nd) and other (BSR, NASA, PDA 3rd, if we need them).

Right now it is scheduled to be a one day event (Monday, 20 June 2005).

Well, one of my concerns is having someone "behind" someone else with just an instructer in the front. Case in point last night heading to the event, coming onto 28 off of 606...nice swing friendly road..and I was full into it...Paul was way behind me, and I know this wasn't Paul not being able to drive, but Paul not knowing the road as well as I do, else he'd of been on my tail pushing me. Unless you're taking fairly reasonably paced (i.e., dog slow for some of us), we could get into some trouble quickly.

Food for thought...

Big difference between Paul unfamilar with a road that you know well at night and going around a track but your point is taken.

Right now I think we are just looking at all the possibilities. The bottom line is to get the most number of cars on the track at one time with the most amount of 'seat time' for everyone that we can safely accomplish.

If we have to cut back 'seat time' for the Group 1 cars then we'll have to do that. Right now it looks like we can provide almost as much seat time in one day as NASA provides in two.

I'm game for that. Get it done in a day. Probably more doable for a lot of people, anyway.

From the looks of things (if we have enough instructors), we can probably get about five 20 minute sessions. NASA normally runs three per day and sometimes they are only 15 minutes.

Yeah, mood killer is what I was aiming for. We're just working stuff out here and figuring out what to do with input from everyone. I figure two-three-four-fifty heads are better than one!

This is a good idea that can only get better with dialogue! [B-)]

Mood Killer? Cold Shower? Hell...I'm behind this 100%...in fact have been wanting to do something like this since day 1 as y'all should recall :)

I just want to make sure this is happens...the last few times we talked about getting the track turned into a "what if" fest and died...

I think this could be awesome on several levels

Mike, it seems to be a pretty tight schedule especially if someone goes off course. Were you planning "hot pulls" ?

Black396
10-29-2004, 08:41 PM
It is tight but not as tight as NASA's.

Good point, I hadn't thought about 'hot pulls'. We would be using BSR corner workers so they are competent enough... Of course Jefferson is half the size of the main track so that means the cars would be encountering the emergency crew twice as often...

We could reduce the number of sessions to 4 instead of 5 and work in a little more time. I wouldn't want to increase the time of the sessions though. Twenty minutes sessions on Jefferson will seem like 30 minute sessions on the main track.

On the other hand if we did reduce the number of sessions... we could make the last session of the day 25 minutes for each group. That would definitely be a 'wake up' call for the first timers.

The four sessions with an extended final session would be fine. I think hot pulls would work only if we had adequate corner workers to throw the flag in time (maybe a full course yellow instead of a red flag would be another idea). Just some thoughts.

The hot pulls would be a call that the Summit Point folks would have to make, don't you think?

Personnally, I think clearing the track to retrieve a car is much safer with a bunch of rookies on the course. [B-)]

NASA has always done hot pulls at their events that I have attended. At least for HPDE2 and above. I can't remember any of the driver meetings from before then.

If we decide that we want to have hot pulls, we could ask BSR if they considered them safe on Jefferson. If we decide not to have them then the majority of the time required for the pull could come out of that group's time on track. Either during that session or in shortened sessions throughout the rest of the day.

Other questions are:

Flags: Can we get all the different flags (black, blue, white, and checkered) from BSR?

Class room Instructor: Who does the class room training?

Event Co-ordinator: If we have to black flag someone, who do they report to for their ass chewing - ejection from the event?
