Hi Joe,
At Spook as I was accelerating hard in a sweeping left hand turn (turn 4) I distinctly heard the rear end whining (increasing pitch matching the acceleration. I haven't had the opportunity to check the gear oil for metal particles. The noise wasn't noticable in straight-line acceleration. I signed up for a track event the first week of November and am wondering what do I need to do to fix or minimize the problem. --Ralph

BTW, my hearing isn't all that great so the whining could be coming for any location. I just assumed it was the rear because I don't hear it in straight-line acceleration. One other thing, I do know my AC Compressor, when the AC is on, causes some vibration and sounds like a hampster wheel! But when it's turned off, there is no vibration and no noise. Anyway thanks.

Ralph, I've seen this happen before. It could be the rear bearing in the diff. Once you side load the rear you here the whine, check rear wheel bearings also (with the emergency brake off of course). finally does it make noise depending on what gear you are in ? Could be the ZF, Let me know. I can't fix it but I can help you find out whats up. Joe what do you think?

I believe it made the noise both in 2nd gear and as I accelerated and also in 3rd as I shifted in the turn and continued to accelerate.

Guys it's something that I'm going to have to hear. Sorry. I'd really hate to guess and lead you down the road of false hope. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for something simple.

But doing the basics your self could save you some $. Check fluid levels, wheelbearings, u-joints in the half shafts.....

I took it out this weekend and drove it hard into a few acceleration ramps and didn't hear anything above the exhaust and "normal" gear sounds. I'll check the things you mentioned and see if anything is out of line. I'm also going to change the transmission and differential fluids (Redline) just to be on the safe side. Thanks for the suggestions. --Ralph

Hey Joe, It's coming your way. I ran out of time and energy and I'm dropping the car off for you tomorrow night (Tuesday) . I scheduled for you to change the transmission and differential oils on Wednesday (27 Oct). Please inspect the old oil for shavings and refill with something that will handle the heat. I also annotated on the work order to check a vibration when the Air Conditioner is on. OK Thanks again, and I'll see you. --Ralph

Wow! Lots of NVCC red C4s in to see Joe lately. I was at Koons last week and this week! And now Ralph and Andrej's...guess we're helping to keep our sponsor in business, eh?!

My shocks and bias spring are in and ready to go (hopefully) at a bonus LS autoX in November...yippee! Praying that Hayne will let us have the oval at least one last time before the snow falls.[[-o<] Bushings will have to wait, need mucho $$$...[$-)]

If anybody's following this thread...Thanks to Joe for changing the diff and trans fluids. Joe checked the old fluids and they appeared normal. I do, however, have a shot A/C compressor but the A/C clutch is working fine so it's just a matter of not turning on the A/C until I replace the unit. I ran the car at ODS this past Sunday and all seemed fine. No whining under hard acceleration out of turns 2 and 4. So (knock on wood) I'm off to Summit this weekend. [:D] Thanks to all for your comments.

Ralph, after talking to you about that I made it a point to listen, and I didn't here it either the whole time.

Thanks for the validation. Sometimes I can't hear things very well and sometimes what's heard outside isn't heard inside.
