Joe,

Are the 2001 Column Locks under a buliten or recall?
I know other years had problems but Lindsey Chevrolet
is telling me the repairs arent covered.

A bulliten number etc would be helpful

Thanks!

Here is the story on column locks.... There are 2 recalls and 1 tech service bullitin.

First recall #01044A covers:
1998 vin numbers w5123355-w5131069
1999 vin numbers x5100001-x5133283
2000 vin numbers y5100001-y5116233

second recall #04006 covers
1997 vin numbers v5100001-v5109707 Automatic transmission ONLY.

tech bullition (this is only a sugestion for repair not a recall)
#01-02-35-008 this bullition applies to vehicles not covered by recall.

Basicialy what all of these tell us to do is on automatic transmission cars is to install a column lock bypass relay and a diffrent lock plate. On 6 speed cars it has us install a bypass at the BCM(body control module) and a new column lock assembly.

GM knows that they have a problem with the locks and are attempting to resolve it.

Bill I know this doesn't help your 2001 but if you call Customer assist. at 1(800)222-1020 and file a complaint there is a good chance that they will "good will" the repair due to the common problem. It all depends on how many miles and age of vehicle.

There is another way to resolve this and that is to purchase a column lock bypass from Mid-America,West Coast or any other Corvette parts place. But that is out of your pocket. I personally would become a little bit of a "squeaky wheel" with this because GM's problems with these locks. I hope you get it covered....

I picked up my car Thursday, and the service writer couldnt
tell me if it was fixed or not because the tech that looked
at it wendsday had not shown up for work.

Lindsey Chevrolet called me today to tell me they did not fix
it ( i guess the tech came to work ). Guess its time to buy
a bypass and save myself the headache.

Anyone know what the Cig-Lighter connector is for? I really
dont want to have to leave it plugged in to use my car.

Bill I'm a little confused... The cig-lighter connector. Do you mean the one behind the radio bezel? If so this wont keep your car from running.

I had this problem with my z06 (01) Just this past summer, I contacted Koons and It was supposed to be covered under under warrenty But the towing required that it be taken to the nearest dealer ( it allows only a 25 mile limit to be serviced) so it didn't make it to Koons.
Apple Valley Chev. called GM and Gm sent them a new program that is to replace the faulty program and so far I haven't had any more problemssince and it was all done free of charge.
It is not supposed to lock up when the car is moving but mined locked up in reverse while it was moving.
