Call me a wild and crazy guy, but I'm going to do the Giant's Despair Hill Climb in Wilkes-Barre, PA in a couple of weeks.
Check out http://www.pahillclimb.org for details.

It's on July 10/11, you'll be at Summit. But they have other events later this summer.

WOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ANDREJ! UR doing the Giant? I have been there as a spectator only, beer and camera in hand at the hairpin [:D] That is an awesome challenge......CCNEPA's Steve Sincavage holds the record for whatever class the Z06 is in.. He busts me all the time to come up and run it. I hesitated while the Z was still being paid for... and now that it is paid for... I am STILL hesitating..lol [#-o]
Good luck bro.... and be careful! BG
Woodsie: BTW: Steve is who welded my bar in....but I know the distance makes that impractical for you.

I'm looking to getting the Roll bar, because the things I want to do with the car require it and its safer. Oh by the way, I am a certified MIG weld (Metal Inert Gas). Took the welding class over the winter at a local community college. I plan on TIG Winter 2004

I've always wanted to know how to do that.
Do you have any equipment? I want to move the kill switch on the Miata and need to weld a plate. Also need to weld up my Vette exhaust, one of the tail pipes keeps falling off...

GREAT news Mike on your certification.....[=D>] Now did they tell you where the fuel lines run by the frame where the roll bar gets welded to?? [#-o]
AND YES it IS safer, was my first MOD... also allows you to move about all 3 groups in competition depending on who is there...[:-$]

Just go back from the hill climb. It was a lot of fun car-wise and got to hook up with a couple of old PA pals.
Giant's Despair is a one-mile climb with some of the steepest roads I have ever seen. My ears popped when I took the Tahoe up it Friday night! It has a killer turn called Devil's Elbow (right hander with about a 30' elevation change in 100'), which if you take it "on line", has a depression just before the apex that seems like a moon crater and will launch the high horsepower cars into the guard rail above. Low horsepower cars get swallowed up it in and it just about brings you to a stop. Gravity defying! This turn has loud and drunk specatators lining it just waiting for someone to screw up. Heck, the spectators poured oil on the start of the turn to help drivers screw up for this turn! These spectators will throw beer on you if they don't like how you take the turn. They chant "Right here!" to a driver that has gone off in front of them, wanting him to do it again!
After all the turns (sweepers, esses) are done, you get to the really steep part, a 22% grade! I was talking to a Z06 driver and he said he didn't have enough horsepower for this section!
We got 4 timed runs on Saturday and four more on Sunday. We had about 80 cars and that broke us into two run groups of about 40 each. The first group goes up and when you're done with the run, you come back down as a group and the second group goes up/down. They open up the road to local traffic while you are coming back down!
I broke the SpecMiata record on the second run this morning by almost 1.5 seconds!
For future reference, you need a roll bar, fire suit and a SCCA Solo 1 license to run one of these hill climbs. I met a lot of nice folks and am looking forward to another hill climb!

Congratulations Andrej!! [=D>] [=D>] [=D>] [=D>] [=D>] [=D>] [=D>]
Way to go!! 1.5 seconds is fantastic! That one will stand for awhile (at least until you try it again) [;)]

Well, for a bunch of drunks, they were ok. I'd flip my headlights up and down on the way back down, as a wave to the folks that were waving to the returning drivers, and the drunks did get a kick out of that! Some of the old timers said that in the past state troopers would have to go up a couple of times during the racing to haul out the disorderly types. Didn't see any troopers this weekend, though...

ANDREJ: nice going bro on your record! [=D>] I still dont have the nuggies to run the Z06 there...but I have been on the elbow when the cops came up and hauled some of the drunks away....for throwing cans and bottles on the road..
Did you see my bud Steve in the Yellow 01 Z06? He holds the record in that class.. (til I get more nuggies [:))])

Yeah, I spoke with Steve. He gave me some good advice on running the course and I gave him a Spook flyer! George Fanucci was there too and he just sent several picts of my car. I may try it in the Vette next year... More power! [:D]
