Sunday September 20th, 2009 is the All Corvette Drag Racing Day and People's Choice Fun Show, presented by the Corvette Club of America and Tony's Corvette Shop, to be held at the Capitol Raceway in Crofton, Maryland. This is a good chance to see what your car can do and learn a little something about the art of drag racing...or show your car!
Gates open at 11, practice runs at noon. Bracket eliminations start at 3 (3 classes for automatics, 3 classes for manuals, 1 class for cars using electronics). Fees as follows:
$40 Drag Race Fee
$60 Drag Race + NCCC Race
$20 Just Fun Show
$10 Spectator Fee (Children under 12 free)
All NHRA rules apply. Helmets required for ETs 14 seconds and faster. Long pants and closed toe shoes must be worn by all drag racers. All cars must pass tech before they are allowed on track.
For more event info, please contact Pat Roney at 240-506-6283 or proney42@verizon.net ASAP.
General directions to Capitol Raceway: Take 495 North to Rt. 50 East to Route 3 North, go through 4 lights (approx 6 miles) into Crofton. Follow the Capitol Raceway signs and turn left at the Wendy's. Crossover to Route 3 South. Get in the right lane and Capitol Raceway Rd. is 100 feet on the right.
UPDATE: I am extremely ill and cannot lead the caravan to this event. Please use the directions above to reach Capitol Raceway on your own.
See attached flyer for more details...

Have you been to one of these before? Is it pretty easy to get some test runs in from 12-2:30? Or is it super busy?
I'd be looking to try and run my car for the first time, and then enjoy the racing/show.

I've done this event several times and have been able to get plenty of test runs. Come on out!

Looks like I'll be coming out. I sure hope the weather is below 80 though. I'm going to need to buy a helmet. Any idea where I can go to try some on before I just buy one off of the internet?
Thanks!

This store is local, you can go and try helmets on before buying. The folks there are great about helping you find the best fit. They may even have a sale...

OG Racing rents helmets .. this is much cheaper than purchasing one.

This is exactly what I did. I look forward to meeting some people this Sunday and running some 2.5 60ft's as I've yet to ever launch this car. :D
EDIT: I Actually might not do the Caravan thing considering the meeting spot is in the exact opposite direction of Capital Raceway (I'm in Arlington) How would I know who is from this club at the track?

Most of the people who have attended this event tend to be from the C'ville/Manassas area, hence the caravan meeting spot. It's convenient to 66 so we can just jump on and go...
Just look for a red C4 with the license plate "LTL R3D", introduce yourself, and paddock with us. I'll have a bunch of Corvettes with me from the caravan.
Weather report looks nice...
PS-If you find you enjoy track events, in the long run it'll be cheaper to just buy a helmet.

I agree. And just FYI for anyone who doesn't know: It costs 35 dollars to rent a helmet for 10 work days, and you get 35 bucks off your purchase of a helmet after renting one. Guy said it was good for one year.

Sounds good. And if you happen to notice the only C5 out there running 14 second times spinning through 2 gears with a non-driver at the wheel, feel free to introduce yourself. :)

Sorry to hear. I kept looking for you. There were probably a dozen Red C4's but none of them had your liscence plate. Hope you feel better.
Well I had good news and bad news. The car ran strong. I've never launched or really raced the car before. It is stock down to the paper filter with just an axle back exhaust.
I am car 191.

The 108mph time was me shifting at @5500 in 2nd and 5000 RPM in 3rd and 4th. After the first run the car would feel like a civic past 4500 RPM. I let it cool for a while and it would run up about 5k RPM's and then fall flat. The coolant temps were hitting 240+ while in the staging lanes... turning the car off did not help.
It scared me how the car would feel good and then fall on it's face past 4500 RPM. On the highway after the races it felt fine. I'm hoping it was just pulling timing due to the heat?
I couldn't run anymore due to a brake fluid leak on the rear passenger wheel, didn't want to cause a wreck. Here's the video.

I'm a little annoyed at all the issues because I really wanted to practice launching the car. There was literally no waiting to get a run past 1:30. But overall I am happy as I dont think many other cars run 111 mph with as few mods as mine. I went to the track hoping to run 106mph. :P

Sorry I missed you, I was in the ER until the wee hours of Sunday morning and in no position to drag race. I'm glad you had fun!
The heat and high coolant temps WILL make the car fall flat on its face. I would not run the car if it reached those temps, instead I would let it cool off a while in the paddock before running again. I have a lower t-stat on my car, so it never gets that high anymore.
If you are looking for more quarter mile fun, there is another drag day coming up this Saturday 10/3/09 (http://www.nvcorvetteclub.com/nvccforum/showthread.php?t=2930). The weather will be much cooler. I will be there, barring another emergency...
