Let's keep those registrations coming! If you need a high speed license, get with me too.

Workers, workers, workers, we need corner workers! If you can help, we also need some one to step up for timing chief. We also need a timing helper, course setup and course take down, and we could also use a trainee course marshall. In addition, we need more corner workers!

Let me know what you would like to do and I"ll put you on the list and get you trained. No job is too tough that we can't take a raw newbie and get you up to speed safely. I also guarantee that you will have a ball, not matter what you end up doing.

If you don't know what you'd like to do, just let me know and we'll get you squared away. You haven't spent a fun weekend anywhere until you've spent it working at the Spooktacular!

A heads up for TECH....... at the recent NCCC competition meeting it was voted on a clarification that ALL CENTER CAPS from 1984 to the present MUST BE REMOVED for SPEED EVENTS

It was argued that some you have to remove the wheel to remove the center cap and for Group one street cars without a jack that is a hassle.

However, bottom line is that it was decided they must be taken off.

SO as EVERYONE preps their car for our event, get those caps off and do NOT whine at TECH to Woodsie that you dont have a jack and they are secure and wont come off.

NO SURPRISES ok? [#-o]

Hi everybody,
I am sick to my stomach cause I don't think I can make the event this year. [:(] I have enjoyed this event and all the people since 1997 when I first came out with the old blue RP Grandsport.

I am not giving up yet and am still trying to find a replacement worker for me in Topeka so I could come.

It looks like another great turn out. I love taking the corner workers/friends for death rides at the end of the day. [>:)] [:D]

Was hoping to hear on Friday if my 'Vette is going to make it out of Koons in time for Spook. (It has some RF frame issues where the upper control arm connects to the frame.)

Was hoping to get my check out for all the runs on Saturday.

Guess it'll be Monday for both.

Until then ...

Brian being tech for 12 years for the spook. It used to be held at Old Dominion Speedway. I will no longer be lead tech. Paul B. is the new tech person.

So Paul: If they have Center caps and I'm sure everyone will. I recommend you have a person at the front of the line. Telling them about the new tech decision and get them out of the line if they have center caps. The RCD will be there.

Chris,

Your HS license will be at registration at the track on Friday Sept 28. See me.

A modded 2002 could fit into Group 2H. However, a blower or coilovers puts you into Group 3MH.

What is non-stock about your engine and suspension? Do you have a roll bar and fire suit? Because if you've done enough to your engine/suspension to put you into Group 3, you'll need both of those...

Car
- Engine: 383 stroker (NA; incl. cold air intake, ported TB, long tube headers, high flow cats, aftermarket mufflers), dyno tuned @ 479 rwHP
- Suspension: Non-stock, but conventional (VB&P leaf springs & Bilstein shocks, no coil-overs)
- Safety: Helmet (of course); neck brace/cushion (no HANS); driving gloves (fire retardent); stock seat belts & seats; bolted in harness bar; mounted fire extinguisher; no roll bar or fire suit
- Dare I say Group 2H? [:-/]

Oh yeah. This being my first Spook (not first event @ Summit Point), are there pre-event tech forms I need to have filled out prior to showing up? (I might have missed the forms on the Spook site or somewhere else.) Or, is it on us to make sure things are correct in order to pass through tech at the track?

Well, we could always use more corner workers.

Why don't you give Piper Motorsports a call? They're in Sterling and may be able to hook you up with a roll bar before Spook. A driving suit can be picked up at OG Racing, also in Sterling.

The roll bar will also allow you to add harnesses. Those are a significant improvement for the driver!

Thanks for the ideas. I dropped a line to Piper about costs, etc. Didn't know they were out near OG Racing and IAD.

I was partly joking about running my Honda. I'm not sure I'd want to kill the auto tranny. I'd probably rent a car from the airport and and trash it before my Honda.

To be honest, if I can't run the 'Vette, I can come up on Sat and be a corner worker or do registration, etc. I'll let you know.

CHRIS mine is a DOUG RIPPIE (DRM) bar. It comes raw steel and I had it powder coated and then welded to my frame.... All of which takes time which you are not gonna have.

See where George got his from... then make a decision...the fire suit is a non issue for you... one phone call and its on your front porch.

Check out the clearance sales OG Racing has. I found mine there, got it for around $500, was originally close to $1K. 3-layer fire suit (great for those cold mornings), current date, just was a discontinued style. It helped that it was an odd size, too.

Robby @ Piper gave me a quote ($$$$; w/ harnesses). Don't think it can be done in time for Spook.

Depending on what I find on the NVCC site, I may start a separate discussion thread on the merits of stock vs. harness bars vs. roll bars vs. roll cages. There's certainly a lot of opinion about the four on sites such as CorvetteForum.com, etc.

Andrej, I'll PM ya.

And now, back to your regularly scheduled Spook channel! [:D]

Chris,

A couple of things to chew on for you.
1. With the amount of track days you are doing and the speeds you are running STAY AWAY! and I say STAY AWAY from harness bars!!! I can't stress that enough to you buddy!!! If you roll that car and the top comes in, guess what is going to be the main point of impact when you can't duck because you are strapped in with harnesses! YOUR NECK!!!

2. Also, if you can wait on them Piper is the best in the area. He really knows what he is doing and does a class A job on everything he touches.

Yep. That's kind of the line I started thinking based upon all the postings here and on other sites. Crashes such as whomever's end-over-end happening in front of me in a '04 CEZ06 on the Jefferson Circuit at the NVCC HPDE back in Dec '05 also put it into perspective a bit more.

BTW, I posted my concerns over on a 'reopened' NVCC thread, Re: Question for discussion - Seat Belts or Harness (http://www.nvcorvetteclub.com/mvnforum/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=2094&offset=30#23000)

Then again, HPDE's - if that's you main focus, is not exactly door to door racing.

{The ZO6 already had a built in roll bar. Many Pro's entering World and National competition actually cut it out to save on weight while they also install full cages.}

In an HPDE, you’re more likely to injure your neck in say - a head on collision - such as a wall or even sliding in sideways into a wall or stationary object. In this case a roll bar is a nice to have - but it's your "neck" that will have to be the main point of concern. Five and Six point harnesses are necessary - but a critical safety tool most people would want is a Hans device. They are more expensive then most roll bars purchased on the web [and a big reason why you don't see people wearing them]. But - then what’s the price of a neck injury? Aside from a Hans the next thing to consider is door protection. A driver's side window net also helps.

I'll probably get a lot Bashing for saying this b/c several guys running in HPDE's at NVCC have roll bars and all of us are rather opinionated [some more than others] - and I think that's great. It's not like there has never been a roll over in an HPDE - b/c there has. Hell, there have been roll over’s going 25 mph in autocross.

In my opinion [and Miriam will back me up on this b/c its what she preaches in class at every HPDE I have attended where she is instructing] if you are going to install a roll bar b/c you want to protect you noggin in the event of a roll over - you might as well go all the way and install a full cage. It's great that your head will have less of chance of getting pushed down into your chest - but then where does your face go when the windshield comes smashing in as part of the roll?

All I'm saying is that "IF" HPDE is the prime focus - as opposed to door to door racing - I think there should be at least - if not more -consideration given to what [in my opinion] is more likely to happen and as a result - ones neck needs to be protected - regardless of the price.

OK ... I'll accept the DumbA$$ award!
IIRC ... and at my age that's iffy ... we pulled down tech forms and filled them out ahead of time in previous years ...
Not so?
If so ... where is the form?
TIA

Denny,

I've modified the Spook event on this website. Pick up your tech form (NCCC form available on the ERNCCC website too), lunch request and car number at registration at the track. Bring your HS license and state drivers license. Don't forget to sign the waiver!

Thanks for the info, I talked to Mike Geyer today and he said tech was at the track Friday and I thought that was wrong after all the years it was at the hotel.

Thanks for clearing that up!

The Tiretown crew is leaving around noon and should be there by 6 PM for some COLD beverages. [:D]

Can't wait to see everybody again. [=D>]

I couldn't get any hotel to give me a price for 30 rooms.... [:((]

So it's all at the track this year.

We will have the beverages waiting for you. Drive safe!
