I got an original equipement from Superior Chevy in Kansas. Major dealer there gives big discounts to people from the CorvetteForum. Cost with shipping for mine was less then the discounted price from any of the dealers around here.
I can get the guy's name and phone number for you tomorrow if you are interested.

Will do, and being a member of the CorvetteForum is as easy as going to Corvette Forum (http://www.corvetteforum.com/) and registering.
The guy (Chris) doesn't ask for a number or anything, and the phone number is a 1-800.

Z,
Go to any Fairfax Auto parts store and get their rebuilt rack. It's about $150 with a lifetime warranty and it will be the fast ratio Z51 (2 turns wheel-to-wheel). I have one in my car and have had no problems for over two years. The tie rod ends will be more expensive ($85 each) if you have to get those at the same time.

I finally found the contact info for Superior Chevy. (I was looking for that hammer I was going to loan you. I swapped PCs and lost half my files)

Update.
Now have the rack out, what a dirty job.
Mine had FH on the dust cover so I assume that NS must
be Z51. Andrej did you install oil cooler as well with yours or
did yours have one already. Mine only has the oil cooler tube, let
me know as soon as possible so I can go out order what I need.

Z,
Yeah, it is a messy job.
My car already had the cooler for the power steering. You should be able to order the cooler from Koons. I paid about $125 for it myself, as I cut the return line in the wrong place and could not get a new fitting.

Zoel the power steering cooler wasn't an option in '86 so I had to fabricate a mount for it when I added one on mine. I'm not sure when it became available as an option but there were two different styles available that I am aware of. One for the later C4s where the PS reservoir was on the passenger side and one for the earlier C4s with the reservior on the driver's side.
The difference in the cooler is the positioning of the inlet and outlet. The earlier cooler had both on the driver's side. The later cooler had one on each side. The mounting of the cooler changed also (probably about the same time)
The cooler on my 96 attaches directly beneath the sway bar. The mounting brackets are welded to the front end assembly that supports the front bumper.
I believe the earlier C4 mounting brackets were bolted to the frame and the frame was drilled and tapped for the bolts.
When I fabricated my bracket I used a piece of angle aluminum (looks like a capital L )
Good luck with the install. Don't know if the above was helpful or confusing. [:-/]

Yes Mike mine has the option for steering cooler or cooler tube,
my 89 shop manual shows both and yes mine is a bolt on bracket not weld on and yes the inlet and outlet are on the driver side.
But the FH on the cover or the NS on the cover is still confusing, I though that mine was not close ratio but then I found a rack in Mid America that says Z51 is 2 - 2 1/4 turns and the Z52 is 2 3/4 turns. I tried mine before I took it out and it was 2 - 2 1/4, so I don't what I have[:-/] [:-/] [:-/]

Have you had your car since it was new?
The Z51 is definitely 2 1/4 turns. I replaced the rack on my 86 with the Z51. Thre original rack was not quite 2 3/4 turns, more like a little over 2 1/2.
I ordered the replacement rack from Superior Chevy (I told you about them). I'm not sure about the stamp on the cover you are talking about. GM actually lists two different part numbers for the racks.
There has been a lot of dicussion on the Corvette Forum about the different racks. A lot of the parts places didn't know the difference between the racks and some only listed one rack.
I would try to take a look at mine on the 86 but it is currently under about 4" of snow and ice [:((] Where is the stamp you are talking about located? Is it on the small aluminum cap on top of the rack?
To make matters worse Chevy tossed parts around rather indescrimnently. The 86 is not a Z51, Z07, Z52 etc. car. However, it does have a number of the options that were combined under the Z51 rpo.
There are individual RPOs for the oil cooler, extra fan and some of the other RPOs that made up the Z51 RPO. but I haven't seen or heard of a RPO for just the Z51 rack.

No Mike it had 72000 km on it(not miles) when I got it.
The FH stamp is on the dust cover driver side, under side, as you look up where the steering column comes into the rack. The FH on the cover or NS on the cover are for 1989 only, I think, and yes, chevy tossed their parts around. Will check my RPO#'s in the glove box and go from there.

Are your sure you need a rack? Try this, with the car off and key on so you can turn the steering wheel. Go back and forth about 20 times. Start the car and see if the power steering works. if it doesn't you have a bad rack call John Sealock at Dynotech 540-752-1600. that job sucks. If it does then you need to flush the PS fluid completly. Get some cheap fluid and use a turkey baster and suck all the fluid out of the PS resevour, add new fluid start the car and move the steering wheel back and forth. do this until its clean. Hope it works good luck

Good news! Sounds like you are ready for the first autocross then, eh?
The first autox this season is the SCCA Test and Tune on March 28, followed by Bel Air's NCCC double autox on April 18.
[:D]
We may have an NVCC autox before these, but no information on that yet.
