View Full Version : NVCC Dyno Day in March: Who's interested?

I plan to visit Tony's Corvette in Gaithersburg, MD and Curry's Auto Serivce in Sterling, VA to discuss whethey they would host a NVCC Dyno Day for us.

The cost would include 3 pulls on the dyno with an 02 wideband analyzer (indicate your air/fuel ratio), which may between $75 and $90 per car - more cars lower cost. However, I need to come up with an estimate of how many would participate from our club to get accurate rates.

Do you know what a dyno is and what it can do for you?? A computerized engine dynamometer accurately measures torque and rpm and then can accurately calculate horsepower. Knowing the horsepower and torque gives the engine dyno operator or engine tuner a solid basis for making changes in the engine's tuning or to the engine itself. The chart you receive will look something like this:

http://home.earthlink.net/~mjhiggins/ECSDynoforC5.JPG

Tentative Date: 18 March. Please provide your name, year/model of Corvette and date preference if you have one. I figured this would be an excellent event after the 15 February Koons Shop Night.

Thanks, Mike

Mike,

The 4th of March is the Teen Driving school. [;)] Just a thought.

I would be interested if it was set up for Mar 11th or the 18th and
$75 or less.

Yes, let's pick a date with no other events, trying to keep conflicting events to a minimum... [:)]

I really need a baseline on the '89 (if I ever get it back) but it would probably blow up on the dyno! [:O] [:))] [:((] [:-&]

If the '89 is still "sick" I could always use a re-pull of the '94 I suppose, we'll see...

Unfortunately, I have to be in Tucson for my youngest son's wedding on the 11th and I would point out that the Waterside event is going on on the 25th in Hampton. Accordingly, I can only look at the 18th but I am somewhat flexible on cost - not to exceed $90.

Yes, we can't impose on Waterside, it's a big Virginia event...I'm considering going, will post the details later on.

My participation in the dyno with the '89 is iffy. The slave cylinder is on a national backorder (has been for months) and its arrival time is uncertain. [:(]

I'd be interested if 75$ or less, I'd love to get a baseline on the Stang before I start the mods.

FWIW, there is also Excessive Motorsports in Manassas 703-331-1422. They have done a number of dyno days for the Northern Virginia Mustang Club and CrossRoads On-Line.

Its been a couple of years since I was out there with the Mustang club. I want to say that it was $65 but I'm not positive.

The day I was out there with the NVMC it was an all day affair.

well, if a Mustang shop is up for consideration, you may want to look into using Springfield Motorsport on Terminal Rd.

My brother (Saleen Mike) used them before and Jon and Wheat are both good fellas [B-)]

They charged something like 60 bucks for 3 pulls and another 15 for an air fuel ratio print out

The Air Fuel was cool, as it used a sniffer sensor - they found no need to add a bung to the exhaust [B-)]

They did a bunch of Corvettes too one day - treated the group VERY well! [B-)]

Interesting! They told me NO 'vettes when I went there a couple of years ago. AND their atitude was anything but pleasant.

Of course that was before they got such a sorry reputation with a lot of the local Mustang crowd.

Wheat is a very nice fella and is actually a Corvette enthusiast at heart [B-)]

The price was right and location fairly central and easy on/off @ the Newington 7100 exit off 95

Terminal Rd. is where they are at - again, Nice guys - Maybe that was because of my brother [:-/]

Personally - I would prefer a Dyno Jet rather than a Mustang Dyno [No - not the type of car :-)] for this event. Do you know which type of dyno machine these shops use? I appreciate everyone's help. If you have a friend/contact at Curry's or Excessive that can give us a good deal - that would be great. Both prices are reasonable for the services offered.

Mike,

Unfortunately I won't be around that weekend. I will be down in VA Beach for a marathon. I'm trying to qualify for Boston, and it's going to be Erica's first marathon. I like the DynoJet simply because that's what most of the local ones are. I'm just hoping to get a baseline in case I decide to ever do any mods or want to see what the difference is after putting some miles on it.

Lets go with the DynoJet for this event if we can find a shop that can provide one on that date with A/F for a good deal. What do you guys think about Tony's Corvette in Gaithersburg, MD? He recently conducted a Dyno Day for members on the Corvette Forum. My previous dyno's were done on DynoJets so using this type would help me baseline my mods, etc. I will contact him on Monday.

Well, I agree with the idea of using baseline data, but since I have both Mustang and DynoJet data from which to work, either system is acceptable to me.

Of course, Curry's in Sterling is a lot closer to me than Gaithersburg is so that has vote at the present time. The non-negotiable point for me is the date - the only weekend I have available in March is the 18th so. for me, its that date or I can't play. I do understand that I am not the only guy and I certainly am not the one making decisions but thought I would add my two cents.

Black396

I don't care, Tony's is fine I guess. I've been wanting to check them out anyway. The 18th is also the only day I have free.

Its going to be a busy season this year.

Team, IMO Tonys Corvette shop is the PREMIER place to have our vettes dynoed given the state of the art facility he has there, which includes a DynoJet! Its impressive. We need a minimum of 8 participants ($640) as they have a $600 group minimum for their Dyno Day, which is fair. Please check to ensure you have the 02 bungs in your exhaust system (prior to the catalytic converts) if you want an A/F check as well. If you're missing them - perhaps they can be added during the Koons Shop Night in February (check with Joe Malo).

I would like to lock in this date and location for this event tomorrow afternoon. Please provide me the information requested below if you plan to attend. Thanks, Mike

Subject: Dyno Day at Tonys Corvette Shop

Good morning,

Thanks for the contact for the dyno day. Yes, we can do it on the 18th of March. The cost of $80 per car is OK, but I must charge a minimum of $600 regardless of how many cars show. With 10 cars to run, it will be necessary to start early, like 8:30 am, in order to get them all on the dyno. Usually, 2 runs are sufficient as we will generally overlap the results on each run as we are highly calibrated and accurate. We will also try to provide a plasma screen display of the results as they happen for the audience to see!!

Your members must have "bungs" in their exhaust systems prior to the catalytic converters in order to read air fuel ratios. We will not have time to install those the day of the runs. If anyone needs them installed, they should make an appointment with me before and we can install them. I will only rea! d air fuel on cars running unleaded fuel, no racing fuels!

Please provide me a list of cars that will be attending. I will need the following information ahead of time to have everything set up to save us time on dyno day.

Owner Name, address, phone #
VIN Number
Trans: Auto or Six Speed
Rear Axle Ratio

Note: Automatics will be dyno'd by "inertia" as we will not have time to do transmission set-ups.

Please let me know if this is a go, and get me the info a couple weeks prior to the dyno day.

We look forward to having you here and doing the testing in our laboratory environment.
