Good news for all you gear heads and good people alike! We will be holding a shop night at Koons on Wed., February 15th!!! So it's time to bring your babies out of the garages and dust them off to get them ready for spring! [:D] Once again Joe Malo has opened his doors for the club to come in to work on their Corvette for the evening!!! Thanks Joe! [B-)]

For those that have now been to a shop night before it is a lot of fun to attend. Pretty much anything you can do to your car in UNDER 4 hours is welcome. (No Tranny changes!) If you just wanted to bring your toy out to change the oil or just look under it to see what it looks like is fine too. There will be plenty of people there to help out and give sound advise also. If you have routine maintenence you want to do that's ok too! Hope to see everyone out there!!!

Oh, by the way. this night WILL NOT take the place of the February GBM meeting. In the past we have canceled the meeting but we are going to try something a little different this time to see how it works out.

while up on a lift, the rear wheel bearings are what I would look at mostly - that, and the condition of your exhaust, as the car is now 11 yrs old.

You can also look at / for any leaks, as there are 3 main places they tend (LT1's) leak - front seal, rear seal, and temp sensors/fill level [:((]

Ball joints, upper and lower, front and rear spring, all bushings... the list goes on and on. Basically start at one end of the car and walk to the other looking at everything along the way.

Rears take as much time and effort as fronts - e-brake is part of the rear caliper assy. so when it is swung out of the way, the rears just come right off [B-)]

The manual says that the e-brake cable has to be disengaged and then it explains to do that at the e-brake lever. To get to it, I'd have to remove my racing seat (royal PIA). Are you saying this step isn't necessary?

The seat stays in. There is plenty of cable length with the e-cable released (in the down position) to remove the caliper.

Thanks for the help, folks. Chris, your comment brought back an old memory. I was pretty nervous the very first time I attempted to change my brake pads -- I had never done brakes on anything before. I was successful on the fronts and, with new found confidence, started the rears. I loosened the bolt but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get the frickin' caliper to budge! Discouraged, I tightened everything back up, took the car off the stands, and then RELEASED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE to move it in the driveway! At that second, I felt like a total idiot! [:))] [:))]

Ecsta MX's. I talked to a guy out in Leesburg that swears by them. He said that he has had 2 sets of them and he's gotten 35,000+ miles out of each set and they have super grip for a street tire.

Shop Night is considered an event, not a meeting. Membership requirements are as follows:

-One General Business Meeting
-One event that is not a meeting (ie, shop night, social event, rallye, autox, HPDE, etc)

The application with $10 MUST be turned into the membership director, who in turn will supply you with the form to fill in your two events. The events do not count until you have this form...once received, you will have 4 months time to complete the events, have it signed by an attending council member, and return the form to the membership director.

Further membership questions can be referred to Judy Patrick at thepatricks@starpower.net [:)]

You have to at least be a prospective. You can fill out your application along with your $10 fee and you can participate. That will count as your one event needed then you only need a meeting to be voted in. [;)] [:)] This prevents anyone and everyone from showing up that is not a member because this is one of the benefits of being a member, and Koons is our sponsor.

The events do not count until you have this form...

Acutally there isn't anything in the By-Laws to that effect. What it says is that the 4 months that the two events (one of which must be a business meeting) doesn't start until the application and fee is submitted.

In the past the council members have carried blank applications with them. If someone wanted to submit for membership, the event coordinator/council member would sign that the event was attended and that event would count.

The application and fee can be submitted to any council member attending the event. Again nothing in the By-Laws says that the application has to be submitted directly to Judy (Membership Chairperson)

You are correct Mike. I always keep the extra forms with me for these types of occasions and can get them to Judy ASAP.

In Laurie's deffence though we have had these discusions at the meetings in the past and it was clearly noted that things like this need to be for the benefit of our dues paying members. We all came to agreement that if a person is willing to fill out their membership request along with their $10 processing fee they can participate in events like this with us. That way we know the person (persons) are interested in joining the club and not taking advantage of our benefits like this. [:)]

Basically the same thing I already said, Mike! After the fee and app are submitted a form is mailed to the prospective which needs to be filled in with the 2 events and signed. The 4 months when the prospective receives the form. Judy has said more than once that this is the proper process. Since she's membership director, I would imagine that she has a system to keep everything straight. We owe her that much.

In the past the council members have carried blank applications with them. If someone wanted to submit for membership, the event coordinator/council member would sign that the event was attended and that event would count.

Again, this has the potential to get messy and think we should follow Judy's system since she is 'in charge' of all of this. And I do carry membership apps with me as well. I would think that if a person was serious about becoming an active member that they would be attending more than 2 events anyway!

The application and fee can be submitted to any council member attending the event. Again nothing in the By-Laws says that the application has to be submitted directly to Judy (Membership Chairperson)

Again, you've misunderstood me. I said that any council member can to sign the form with respect to events attended. It's true that any council member can take the application but they are only mailed to Judy anyway since she is the only one who processes them.

As I said before, if anyone has membership questions, they can be emailed to Judy, it's probably best that she handles it directly. JMHO. [:)]

As I said before, Judy should be involved in this.

Now, back to the Shop Night discussion.

That's cool. [B-)] I'll be back on Wed.
This thread is not the place to discuss this. I wrote everything down at the meeting and will discuss it when I get back in town.

I'm planning on becoming a member and was just about to mail in my application. Seeing this I think I'll wait till shop night to do it. Who should I look for that night to turn the form and check in to?

Look for George Kerns (the Prez) and give the application and a check for $10 to him.

Just ask anyone and they'll point him out. Just come down to the service bays on the east side of the building. We'll be parking there before getting into the lifts and bays.

I have a tunnel plate I need to install. Hopefully, someone who's not too busy that night can help me with some of the disconnect/reconnect work (i.e., dropping the X-pipe to gain access.)
I've done this mod on my 2002. Bring 13mm sockets and a few cordless drivers. I'll be there and I'm happy to help. It's really pretty easy.
Thanks for the offer of help! I have one 13mm socket right now and one 12v drill rather than a driver. You think I can find some drivers @ Koons? I think I can find an extra 13mm socket there. If not, I can go buy an extra one before the 15th.

If I make it, I'll try and remember my 3/8 drill driver adaptor.

Sorry to rehash this I promise I will keep this on topic. How hard is it to bleed my clutch? The fluid is BLACK and not a clean black either I don't think it's ever been changed. Is that something I can do? And\or can I lower my car in that time frame?

Black396
02-07-2006, 12:03 AM
It shouldn't be that hard to bleed the clutch on a rack. I'm sure we can get it done.

I'm not sure what it takes (or how long) to lower the car. There was a write-up on the Corvette Forum a couple of months ( maybe six) about how to do it.

Maybe one of the guys that has done it will chime in.

I thought about doing this myself. I talked to Joe today about it and he said that it's easy to do. However your car is going to need to be aligned afterwards though because it will effect the tow in, and alignment. Of which he can't do there because the rack they have is a ramp rack and will catch the front end after being lowered.

Lowering the car isn't very difficult, but I've found that the bolts for doing this on most cars are partially or completely frozen. I lowered my c5 without a lift and it took just under two hours. A lift should reduce that to about 30 minutes.

Just need a lift for an oil change. I am not sure if I want to drive it in the salt and crud....just detailed it two weeks ago and have not driven it since.

Worst case, I will be there with some tools, 04 manuals (basically the same for most C5's) and offering to help others.

Man I was really looking forward to changing it the easy way for once!

BTW, where do we "line up"? Is it in front of the lower shop facing 123?

Down in front of the bays, normally parallel to 123 (ChainBridge Rd) lining up down towards Koons Pontiac (towards the south)

Hi all!

Thanks to everyone... my first NVCC event was definitely cool and I'm looking forward to more. I just wanted to change the darn oil since I've never messed with my '02 at all and it was great to see the underside of the car for the first time!

Special Thanks to:
-George "the pres" for helping me get a lift...
-Joe Malo for showing me how to use the lift and not kill my car!
-"The guy with the white '00" for lending my completely unprepared self the ratchet, oil filter wrench for a C5, and funnel to replace the Mobil 1 that I took out (I don't think I ever got your name).
-Laurie for being the first person I knew when I got there and getting me started!

Anyway, I really enjoyed this event and look forward to becoming an active member of the club.

Nice chatting with you too... when we were talking you mentioned LilRed was in a magazine but I didn't know you meant CE (I just read the other thread). I subscribed to that for a year or two when it first came out, or I guess when it got switched from an older 'Vette rag a few years ago (what was that older one?). Then I let my sub run out... but I just renewed it tonight since now I have some new friends that are addicted to "the car" like I am!

Congrats on the magazine, save me one of those extra copies in case they don't send my first one 'till the May issue!

Wow! 22 cars showed up for the shop night! I think that is a record. First of all I would really like to thank Joe Malo, and Koons for having us there for this event. Joe like a couple of others were exhausted by the end of the night. This is one of the reasons we become members of NVCC.

We had several new prospects show up last night to see first hand how we like to have fun. I recieved a couple of membership applications to turn in to Judy. 89x2 also showed up(Calloway Chris). I was tald that he was wirting an article for Corvettte enthusiast Magazine and is going to mention NVCC and Koons in hiis article. Chris, let us know when it makes it in! [;)] All in all a really good night! A lot of good things got done to a lot of cars.

Hi all:

I'm someone must have asked this in the past, but I've been looking through older posts and can't seem to find it. I apologize if the answer is painfully obvious without me asking, but...

Last night I changed my oil at shop night and forgot to ask someone how to reset the "Oil life remaining" readout on the DIC to 100%? Otherwise I'm sure it's going to start yelling at me soon that I need to change the oil. Do I need a special computer interface or something or is it simpler than that?

Thanks!
Chris

It should be in the owner's manual under oil life...

Should be something like...

1. Turn key to ON with the engine off
2. Press the TRIP button until the OIL LIFE % displayed
3. Press RESET and hold for two (2) seconds
4. Turn key to OFF

That's what it is on my 04, hope its the same.
