View Full Version : Where have all the Evo's gone?

For those of you that missed Hyperfest, it was another shameless exhibition of Corvette speed. On the way home, it occurred to me that our diet was a little deficient in rice. It would have been more satisfying if we knew we were driving against the best the others had to offer. Evo's & STX's were in short supply.
It was a good thing that Woodsie and Matt were there, because the rest of us would have gotten big heads without seeing those 2 go by. As it was, we even held our own in the last session with the instructors. I passed 3 -911's in the last session, and received applause from the corner workers in turn 9.

A note for Bill...we found out that you get a [b]free day of driving for every 2 days of corner work that you do for NASA.

That's all good to here Dave! Glad you had a good time. I was up there on Friday for FATT and had a blast! We had a wide variaty of cars also. Corvettes, Vipers, Elises, Mustangs(Rousch Special),Fararis, NSX (1 lap of America car), and even a Porsche GT3. [:D]

I did not know that, time is the worst thing right now though
Living in NC & working in DC means my weekends are
a bit more important since I dont get to see my wife/kids
during the week. But we'll see how things get sorted out.
Only been doing this for a month now, and it seems to
be getting better.

Man I wished I could have made the last session. I got the Z06 home and checked the tires. I corded both left side. I spoke with a Goodyear rep about what I did and he said I did not have enough camber. I explained I have -2.0 in front and -1.8 in back. He said my pressures were to low. I explained 30 lbs cold and 36 hot. He then asked what track.....I said Summit and he just laughed and said thats alot of Right turns...I said well it looks like Kuhmo and Hoosier ran just fine their. His attitude changed a bit and I'm sending my tires to them with replacements on the way. Not free but very, very cheap

Mike,

Glad you're getting replacements, but what was the deal?

Way to go Mike. Glad to hear they are at least going to stand up to some of the cost.

We definitely missed you and Matt for the last session. We did try our best to uphold the 'Corvette mystique' with the instructors. [:))]

Yep, I had a good time as well running on Saturday. I would have rather been driving on Sunday, but the ride with Dave was a good time. Thanks to Matt for letting me borrow his pick-up and tour around the West Virginia country side looking for brake rotors. The only thing I accomplished Sunday morning was to burn up some more gas and pinpoint all the local auto parts houses!!

The good news now is that my new 13 inch rotors and caliper brackets are on a UPS truck head for the house. That should cure the brake problems! Ought to be fun down at VIR in two weeks. See you there!! - Jack -

Way to go Jack on the 13" rotors. No problem now if you have to 'borrow' a set at the track. [B-)]

Just got an email from Ralph and he's getting the rack & pinion fixed under warranty so he's looking forward to making VIR as well.

We'll see you there.

To me the most important part of the Summit Point is turn 5-10. I think you gain the most time in the slowest part of the track. So I was rotating the rear of the car from turn 6-7 which lined me up pretty straight for 8 and I was able to really haul to 10. I know I was really pushing it in the second session on Sunday and corded the left tires. Oh I have a novice student with me and I think he was going to cry when he got out of the car. I asked him if he had any questions......he just said it was the most intense thing he ever experienced and then said he has alot to learn and walked away.....weird.

I can't lie I was alittle nervous in some of the turns, sliding....sorry getting as much slip angle as possible

I've been reflecting on the weekend. Driving is fun but it wouldn't be half as fun without sharing it with you guys. I really think we all are really pushing each other (in a positive way) out there. Constantly changing positions with Mike S, Dave, John, and Jack is great sport while Woodsie and Matt keep us humble! By the way, I blew the steering rack seals on the last lap of the last session. Got home and found my receipt from Koons for replacing it last July, made the warranty deadline by one day! [:D] [:))]

You shouldn't be scaring those novices! [:))] [:))] Take it easy on them, they may want to come back ($$) if they feel they can master some of the stuff you're doing. Save the really fast stuff for the Group III guys/gals that understand what you're doing...

 thanks for the pointers...

I knew that I had picked up at least a little of what you were demonstrating when I had to start shifting to 5th coming out of 9 to keep from bouncing off the Rev limiter.

Hey, I'm a novice and I would ride with Woodsie any day! [:))] [:))] But then again, I've been called a sick b*stard by my wife, and mother all in one sentence! [:D]

Hey Ralph,

Man, you're the king when it comes to getting in under the expiration date on the warranty claims. Me, everytime I buy something, I get the over the curb warranty. That is, when I get over the curb with it, both halves are mine!!

Get that steering rack fixed and we'll see you at VIR. Which reminds me, I'm going to bring my grill down to VIR with me next week and treat you guys to a little Brazilian style grilling on Friday night. We'll do a few steaks, brats and chicken Brazilian style. Of course, we'll need a couple of cold beverages to go along with that. Anyway, see you guys at the cookout next week at VIR!

WOODSIE: I corded my pass front Hoosier at the June HPDE on the Jeff. (Mostly left turns) They were new this year, 2 days at Pocono North and 1 day on the big Nascar track.

Last time I tired to weasel anything from Tirerack he reminded me that racing tires have NO warranty- you are S.O.L. [X-(]

Sounds like everyone had some problems, clutches, steering, brakes..... uggggggg.. We sure have an expensive hobby! [#-o]

Hey Brian. Despite the problems, the heat and the humidity it was a great weekend. To paraphrase Ralph, any day at the track is a good day but the company of friends made it a great weekend.

Sorry you couldn't make it. I'm sure you would have had a blast!
