I'm sitting here at work totally 'fried'. I don't think I have been this tired after a track day in a long time.

Thinking back over yesterday I think I got just as much enjoyment riding 'shotgun' as I did driving. Watching the students improve throughout the day was a real blast.

I saw a lot of tired happy faces going home last night.

A lot of time and effort was expended putting this event on by a number of people. I just wanted to say thanks to Andrej, George and James for all the work they did for this event.

Thanks Mike, you were part of this equasion also along with Mike Woods, Ralph, Miriam, and Bob Compton. If I forgot anyone I am sorry. I myself am sitting here just a little fried after yesterday also! [:D]

The feedbacks, and reactions we have received so far have been good. I wrote a couple of them down so I wouldn't forget.

1. Awsome
2. I am so wore out that I don't know if I can hold the steering wheel to drive home!
3. What a blast! I am absolutely wasted! That's how an HPDE should be!
4. I have been doing these things for years, and I rank this as one off the best because of the instructors both in the classroom, and on the track!
5. When's the next one! I'm in!!!
6. My compliments to your Corvette club, and staff! That was a top notch rush!
7. I've learned more today about my car than the whole 6 years that I've owned it! Great job!

I would also like to thank all the instructors that helped out from the BMW club, and Porsche club! We look forward to having them help out any time they wish!

George

Great Time! I'm impressed that with all that track time, we only had one small off-track all day. Remarkable job everyone! I also want to thank the Porche and BMW instructors who helped and I want to especially thank Miriam for jumping in with both feet on this project. It wouldn't have been the same without her contribution. Thanks Miriam!

Thanks to everyone who made this possible. A total blast, learned a ton, and now totally addicted. Exhausted as heck, too...took today off to recover! Wish LilRed held up better, but I'll work that out. Thanks to you all, I'm looking for apexs at every turn, and will pray for point-bys from slow Hondas out on Route 28. [:))]

Its ok ya forgot me.

Everyone I spoke with had a great time. I got lots of questions about when folks would get their NCC high speed licenses.

I think we need to talk with the folks from Cumberland Valley (the guys that have been to or instructed at the Pocono event). Their input will be invaluable for improving future events.

Also we need to remember - No DOT or M type helmets and everyone must have a fire extinguisher.

What a day! Absloutely the most fun I have had with a car period and I've been driving for 37 years.

Congrats to NVCC and everybody who made this a safe and lifetime memory. You always remember your first time ;-)

Thanks to GM.. what an incredible machine the C6 is... just put up with every abuse I could dish out... hey it was my first time... without the slightest complaint. Who would have thought that under that very smooth riding XM radio playing, Onstar, DVD Navigation system driving machine lied a beast waiting for the track. I now truely feel I got my money's worth in this machine.

Tired...oh yeah... sore ... yeah that too.. bruises on the sides of my knees.. yep!

PS.. One side note DO NOT trust you navigation system to get you out of a remote area... mine led me into Aintry...(see movie Deliverence) on the way out of Sunmmit Point! I mean a dead end dirt path!

I'm still tired, but I still have a huge smile on my face, and it'll probably be there for awhile. I learned alot. The format was great, and the instruction was terrific.

Thanks to NVCC for a superb event and for its willingness to allow non-members like me to participate.

Cheers,

I got lots of questions about when folks would get their NCCC high speed licenses.
I think we need to talk with the folks from Cumberland Valley. Their input will be invaluable for improving future events.
Also we need to remember - No DOT or M type helmets and everyone must have a fire extinguisher.

Any current NCCC member who was passed off yesterday by their instructor- will be issued a license by me. Andrej will compile a list- please make sure he knows you want the license. Please note: if you already have a current license, do not ask to renew until it is EXPIRED. How do you know this? Click here: High speed licenses (http://ernccc.org/comp/points/Doc_points/hs.pdf)

Good note too about the helmets and fire ext. This event must follow rule book specs on HIGH SPEED events. We need to specify SA-95/2000 or M-95/2000 (Yes Motorcycle helmets are ok- DOT are not) After this year (2005) any 1995 helmet must have a manufacture date of later than 1996 or it falls to the wayside by the 10 yr rule.

If there is no manufacture sticker, its presumed to be
a 1995 helmet and disqualified.

All in all- a great day! Thanks to all who worked hard to put it together. [=D>]

Strange but true... Cumberland Valley Corvette Club and Northern Virginia Corvette Club are tied for the most ACTIVE high speed licenses.... hmmmmmm.. [:))]

Brian... how about non-NCCC members? We have a few people with Mustangs, F-bodies that would like to run Spook this year (space permitting) A couple of them were at yesterday's event. Can they get a NCCC high speed license or do they need one?

I agree with all the previous posts, it was a superb event. Many thanks to all the folks that spent many hours putting this together. Hopefully, now that the learning curve has been flattened by the first event - Maybe 2 next year ??? [:D] [:D] I would like to give a speical thanks to my instructor, Dave Rankin, his help was spot on in correcting several of my problem areas. Watch out at Spook, I guarantee that I will pick up at lease 2-3 seconds this year.

Brian won't give an NCCC license to a non-NCCC member. So, we have to keep our own records (or they have to show proof of having completed a high speed driving school) to qualify for our high speed events.

A few things:

1. Freaking awesome event, thanks all!
2. Many Many thanks to all the instructors. I know they had to be DOG tired.
3. It was amusing to see Steve Theiss (my instructor) at the beginning sitting in the car, almost casual, and by the end of the day...holding on locked into place. It amazes me how "fear free" he was overall though...and I heard from many other students who made the same comments about how "fear free" thier instructors were.
4. Thanks for the compliments that a few of those drivers I have ALOT of respect for gave. It meant alot, and if they were just being nice, well, dont ruin it for me [:))]
5. Is there a way we can see what our instructors comments were? It would be nice to see where we stood in thier eyes, areas we need to work on.
6. with regards to Non-NVCC/NCCC members, can we come up with something we can give to them with regards to passing the course/instruction successfully?
7. We stopped for a ylw z06 on rte 7, a guy from Annapolis..busted valve spring. [:(] He already had a tow truck on the way...and someone commented that they stopped by after we had and the truck was already there.
8. My instructor wanted to know if he could run spook with us. I know Jeff Beaupre, Jim's son, would like to as well. Who's running spook this year, Andrej, Jim?
9. Umm...can we do this again? Like...tomorrow?

H_ll, yes, they can run with us! Spook is open to all, first come first serve! They do have to meet ALL our requirements, though. The stock S2000 (convertible with no roll bar) and any car without a fire extinguisher, to name a few off the top of my head, will not be accepted. I dont know about "flying". Of the things I accomplished here for me:

1. Learned the lines. the best part was knowing what I did wrong before my instructor said anything. The last 2 sessions were more "tweaking" and, I have to admit, "trusting" my brakes. 100+ into 7 is scary.
2. Got some confidence. I went from being scared to "Let's move this thing".
3. Passing other cars was incredible. Blasting through 5 and setting up for the pass early was like "HELL YEAH!".

I honestly cant thank you guys enough. And Chevy. [\:D/]

Mike handed out 1/2 size sheets to everyone in the morning when you checked in. You were supposed to have your instructor fill it out and go over it with you, and you were to keep that sheet and put it into your log book. The other eval sheet was supposed to be turned into Andrej from the instructor to be evaluated for your NCCC sign off if the instructor approved.

Hey everybody, my name is Matt and I was signed up, paid, and ready to go for this event. Unfortunately, the day before the event a stud broke that holds the pass. side of the exhaust manifold to the head of my motor. I was told to direct an e-mail to "urtoslo@yahoo.com" for inquiries about refunds, which was the address I sent the $125 to in the first place so that was not a problem.

A couple days before the event I had been informed that I was still on the waiting list anyway, so I was thinking/hoping a refund wouldn't be a huge problem since the flyer I saw online said they would be given out to those who didnt make the cut, and I was told the same by someone I talked to over the phone that I believe was Mr. Balanc if my car didnt pass tech inspection.

So anyway, I sent the e-mail to the aforementioned e-mail address last tuesday (1 week ago today) and have yet to receive a response...is there another way to get a hold of those in charge of refunds?

Thanks for any help you might be able to offer,

~Matt

Jeff, He was a stand by. That's what I'm looking into.

That is correct, I was on the waiting list as of the wednesday before the event, which was the last time I had any contact with anyone involved.

I believe there was a line in the form that read "no more refunds after June 12th".

You are correct, I saw that line. However, when I called the number on the flyer (703-220-8228) in late May to ask some questions about the tech inspection, I was told that if my car did not pass the inspection, I would be given a refund.

Given that my car wouldn't have made it to the track, and if it had I'm guessing it would not have passed tech with a broken stud and no way to fully tighten down the exhaust manifold, I figured/was hoping that might fall under that category.

Keep in mind that within 2 miles worth of driving the car to see if it drove ok, 2 tightened bolts (of 4) backed out that hold the exhaust manifold to the turbocharger and were lost at sea (on the road). Luckily I had not gone far from home, and pulled into the garage none the worse for wear minus 2 bolts and a nice exhaust leak.

urtoslo
07-10-2005, 02:32 AM
Matt,

If your car failed tech due to a safety issue, you would have received a refund. You never gave us the chance to fail your car.
If your car was unsafe to drive, you made the correct decision not to bring it to the HPDE.

In order for us to have an event like this, we need to have a people sign up to help pay for the track. If everyone decided not to come out and want their money back, Summit Point would still bill NVCC for the track. That is why we have a no refund policy after a certain date.

Not that a decision has been made in your case (we've been working on the Concours), but would you consider a raincheck for the next event instead of a refund?

I realize that by choosing to not drive my car 1 and a half hours to Summit Point that I waived the chance for a tech inspection. As I said, the car didn't last 2 miles without losing 2 bolts, was not making boost because of a resulting exhaust leak, and the other 2 bolts that hold the turbo to the manifold were loose. This was from about 2 miles of driving, mostly just driving normally near my house and one 20-100mph run that lasts about 8 seconds...as opposed to a 10 or 15 minute lapping session. Based on that, and the fact that I didn't think anyone would appreciate bolts on the track, I decided it would be best not to attempt to drive the car to Summit.

Just wanted to elaborate on the situation, because although you may not have meant it to come out like this, to me you make it sound like I just decided to not show up for no reason other than because I didn't feel like it.

As to the raincheck, that really depends on when and where the event is held. I need to get this stud drilled out of the head so the manifold can be torqued down properly before I would feel comfortable taking the car on the track. I am also a college student and I'm heading back to school sometime around August 13th. I also have to take time off from work to be there if it is a weekday, but that usually isn't a problem anyway...I just need a couple weeks advanced notice. So if the event is at least a few days before August 13th then I probably wouldn't have a problem with a raincheck. If the event is anytime after that I'd really prefer a refund since I wouldn't be able to participate in another event until next spring or summer.

I appreciate you guys taking the time to listen to, and look into, my situation.

The next event is Nov 16, same course, but run primarily in the other direction (clockwise). We are also planning two more events for next year, on Jefferson Circuit in the spring and the main circuit in the fall.

Matt,

Please dont think we're even thinking anything negative, we aren't. And dont think that something similar hasnt happened to all of us at one time or another.

The problem is, the club offers the event and fully funded the event, including meals for instructors, safety workers, etc. When this event was presented to the council, it was done so not as something to make money on, but as something that would allow folks to show up paying minimal prices, the reason that this cost $125 where other events similar to this run from $175 to $250. The council did expect the event to be cash flow positive, and it was, but not by much.

That being said, we depend on every person who wants to show up, to show up...thats the only way to keep the overall cost minimal. If this were something where the club made a few thousand, or even a thousand dollars, and we said, "Sorry, tough luck", I could understand folks thinking we're just here for the cash.

But we didn't make alot of money on this, thus Andrej offering what he did for the next HPDE.

Actually, I have seen events such as this run for even more than that...in the $2-300 range. Just thought I'd chime in on that. [;)]

The intent when planning this wasn't to make $...we certainly didn't make much. Just trying to cover costs as well as put on a quality event. [:)]

I don't want anyone to think that I think you all made a ton of money and are stiffing me or something, that's not the case.

I realize that the goal was not to make money, but I will almost definitely be unable to participate in the Nov. 16th event. If the spring jefferson event or the fall main circuit event are occuring between early may and early august, I could attend one of those. My only concern is that, even if i could attend either of those events, I may be forgotten or whatever info there is about my raincheck may be lost over that period of time by whoever keeps those records for you guys.

In all honesty, I totally understand that a raincheck would be easier for you guys what with the money situation from the last event and all, but (i'm guessing) there will still be a bill for the next events as well. $125 is $125 after all, put towards an event for the future or put in my pocket. I just think a refund would be a lot better considering the circumstances.

Have dates been chosen for either the spring or fall 2006 events?

Matt,

What email address can I send your PayPal refund to? Use the same one you used to send me your payment?

Email me at urtoslo@yahoo.com if you want.

Payment sent a few minutes ago. It is less the percentage PayPal took out when we got it, and they will probably take a percentage out when you recieve it.

See you at the track!

I can't imagine anyone going through that and not wanting their HS license! [:))] I thought that I had made it pretty clear that I wanted mine, but I sent him an email anyway just in case. I know that the non-vette people can't get them from NCCC, but had assumed that he was getting them for all the NVCC members at the very least.

Thanks, Mike [;)]

Havent received this list yet, when I do, I will be sending HS licenses to all who's instructor "solo'd" their students off.. Not all who attended will be in this category, attendance is not a guarantee of a license. ALSO note that any NCCC members who already HAVE a license that is NOT expired, will NOT get an updated one... It has to be EXPIRED before I issue new.

Side note: in future HPDE's we should include a line on the report card like the FATT Driver Evaluation Cards have: Where they say, SOLO STATUS: remain Group one; advance Group two; remain Group two; and Seat Time Group two. We may want to say: remain Novice; Advance Intermediate; Advance Solo (HS License Given). Maybe another name would work, but Advance Advanced didnt sound right [:))]

attendance is not a guarantee of a license.

I am aware of that, but given the results of my evaluation (I have retained my copy) I would imagine that I would be receiving one.

Please let us know the status of all of this, I am sure I'm not the only one interested. [:)]

Brian/Andrej/George

I already have a HS Lic, so that's no major issue to me...and I think enough "heard" me running the track that they know if I'd be qualed to go to the next level, but it would of been nice to have seen my instructors comments, if any. Did anyone get something from him?

JEFF to my knowledge, ANDREJ collected all the instructor sheets (at least I gave him MINE [;)])

I agree students need to see the critique on their day... its a good thing. Wait til Hyperfest is over and I am sure he will get this together.

Was I on the list to receive the HS license?

I also thought everyone that attended the HPDE and received a favorable evaluation from their instructor was automatically submitted to receive the HS license, rather than having to specifically request it. I'm looking forward to VIR at the end of this month, the Spooktacular and the 19 November SP event!

Ok ladies and gents, Andrej is at the track all weekend for Hyper Fest. I will talk to him this week about what is going to happen. My understanding is that the evaluations are submitted to NCCC, and they make the determination on who gets their licenses based on the evaluations, and imput. However, DO NOT hold me to that [:D] because I may be wrong on that. I am in the same boat as everyone else is here so please allow me some time to see what is going on with this. I know SPOOK is right around the corner, and we are all getting excited, but as Laurie knows there are several of us that are handling multiple events at one time, and we need to keep them in order so we don't get confused and sc**w things up.

George..... you are right... [=D>]

The evaluations are submitted to me; the decision I make is to confer and agree with the governor (andrej) that the student, based on what we are reading, is qualified to run a HS event for NCCC. Neither he or I have actually witnessed the students ability, so hence the instructors comments are of utmost importance.

One HPDE tho, doesnt mean its automatic. I know guys who have ran 1,2 or 3 FATT's and until they finally get moved to group two (solo). SO perhaps some students will have to get an FATT in before SPOOK as well.

Note: NASA is running POCONO in August up here, with instructors, if a FATT is not possible. And of course, anyone at HYPERFEST today, should get a report card from NASA as well. We need feedback on the students progress.... Safety to them and all is foremost.

I sent your name, along with a slew of others, to Brian today. That's plenty of time before Spook, so I wouldn't worry about that. Are you trying to get into an NCCC HS event somewhere else in the country before Spook?

Thanks Andrej. Yes - I registered for the two-day HPDE 1 event at VIR on 30 - 31 July in preparation for driving in Spook. I received all 1's and two 2's, along with positive comments from my instructor during the June HPDE 1 session at Summit Point. Awesome experience and learned a lot! I have a copy for my logbook that I hope to get while at VIR. Mike
