I am getting a little frustrated by the 150 mph barrier. My car pulls strongly to 140's. I hit 6,000 rpm at 140. It gives me a few more mph before the fuel starts to cut out @ 6,250. I have tried shifting to 5th gear; it lowers my rpms a little but I don't have enough torque to pull me over 150. I've tried this @ VIR and yesterday at Pocono. I could hit the rev limiter at the end of the front and back straights. Finally I just drove to 6,000 rpm and kept it there for awhile.

How does this compare to the Z06 or C6? Do you still shift to cross 150 mph? Is there enough torque?

Part of it is my fault. I'm not crazy about downshifting to 4th in a turn @ 140 mph. At Pocono, there was an uneven surface at the apex of the tunnel turn. I didn't want to be off balance there.
I thought I was taking turn 1 faster, but I was 10mph faster thru the tunnel turn. And it felt better. I didn't really stick it thru turn one until the end of the day because I slid a little during my 1st session. I saw fresh marks on the wall after lunch, so it took awhile to get brave again.

By the way, Brian wasn't exaggerating in his other post. He was always passing 2 or 3 cars down the front straight.
As for my group, I was passed only 4 times (twice after the checkered flag had come out.) I had passed each of the cars before except for a white Vette w/ heads & cam.

Way to go Dave! Sounds like you had a good time. I'll have to try Pocono with you next year if you plan on going.

HEY DAVE...we all have frustration! Mine is the 160mph barrier. You know the old saying.... "How fast you want to go is directly related to how much you want to spend!" I hit 158-159MPH every time there were no OTHER cars in the way... [:))] But that needle would NOT go over 160!

I would think your car MUST shift to get over 150mph, my car redlines at 7000rpm in 4th gear at 148mph. (gearing different in a Z06) BUT then again, the drop in RPM's takes you out of the power band and then you would slow down. I drop to 5300rpms from 7000 and it pulls hard in 5th.

I was going into 5th (VERY CCCCCAREFULLY) half way down the back strait= and the downshift back to 4th happens AFTER that bump you refer to on the tunnel turn. BUT if you were down to the apex- I mean REALLY down, you wouldve missed most of it. [;)]

I think I am going to look into a small spoiler for the rear deck- the Z's fixed roofline is not the best for air flow- ie: the new C6 Z06 will have a different roof line.

I wish you wouldve mentioned this to me and I wouldve run in your group and watched your line. Turn ONE is the set-up for a fast blast down the Long Pond Strait. Exit speed should be about 125-128mph.

BOTTOM LINE: We had a blast! Mike: I shouldve busted you more to come up like you guys did to me for the NASA HPDE in July.. [:p]

ABSOLUTELY! You won't have to next time (unless of course you are planning another "snow filled wonderland" [:D] [:))]

I think Dave and I had enough of that at Mid-Ohio [:))]

Brian, I was pretty sure my problem was a little shortage of talent, but I wondered if the car is limiting me too. I felt like I fell too far out of my powerband to make much use of 5th gear. But having said that, I never really took turn 1 correctly until my last session. I know I wasn't maintaining my speed thru it because I didn't need to run out as far to the right as the space allowed. That slowed me by 20 mph or so entering the Long Pond straight.
Shifting to 4th after the apex at the tunnel turn would have given me more room, too. I know I was a little sloppy about clipping the apex at times. Sometimes by 2 or 3 feet.

Mike and Ralph would have had a great time at this track. I think Woodsie would have enjoyed it the most, as he would have disturbed some pretty expensive automobiles in his stock appearing car.

Guys, we were scheduled for SEVEN sessions. I only stayed for 5, as I was just about out of gas, and leaving at that time got me home before 9 PM.
Plenty of track time. [:D] It cost $135!

DAVE: Perhaps you HAVE found the car's limits. I remember my car STOCK hitting about 150mph on the back- to get 10mph more means more power....UGG UGG UGG (Tim Taylor [:))])

Mike, Ralph, Woodsie, Drej, Rick P.....all wouldve enjoyed themselves and I am sure they wont miss it next year. YOu know tuesday was the same format if you wanted to stay over again. I didnt go back tues as I wanted to save my vacation day for YOUR event.

And where can you run 150mph and get a ticket and pay LESS than $135! (OH-- and $5.50 for a cheesteak!)

Dave, it sounds like you are planning on a 06 Z06 maybe? [:-/] [:D]

Maybe its time to call Magnuson ;). Another 150hp/tq at the
wheels should put you over the hump [:))]

A C5 Z06 could happen, but I'm going to see how things pan out this year. I'm just about ready to start racing, so I may leave the '97 on the street and have a designated track car.
I can follow in the footsteps of Sarver & Balanc. The thing that worries me is that Woodsie went that way, then came back.

I worry about underhood heat w/ a blower on the track, but I think a magnuson would be excellent for street duty. Heads/cam would be the way to go for the track, but even some of those cars aren't consistent w/ their power.

By the time I put $10K into my car, I could have a Z06. The factory Z06 would probably be more durable.

DAVE: Not sure about the heat off a blower- but you shoot yourself in the foot in NCCC events- we dont have a place for them but EXH and that is LOW speed only. It wouldnt take $10K to get over that 150mph barrier. I dont have any experience with other head/cam packages, but my car is very streetable; yet it has never left me down on the track.Heads/cam would be the way to go for the track, but even some of those cars aren't consistent w/ their power

Here is my tuners website...perhaps closer to you than he is to me. Stage 2 LS1 Head and Cam Package Price: $2,699.00... 400hp/450ft lbs..Just a thought.... Brian

BILL: excellent video.... and looks like a great track to run. I need to tag along next time. [:D] I am trying to figure out how to download video here too. I have some POCONO video you guys may like to see.
