I just visited the NASA OH/IN website (http://www.racenasa.com/) for info on the Mid Ohio event.
The track itself will not be available for drop-off Thursday evening. Tech & registration will be at the Quality Inn.
The hotel is filling fast, so if you haven't made reservations yet you need to get moving.

I picked the Econolodge, too. I spent an extra $5/night to get a smoke-free room.
I don't think any hotel is real close to the track.

It looks like it so far. I think Andrej said something about a prior commitment and it is a distance for most folks. Woods is still trying to get his coolers installed before the season gets in full swing so he won't be going...

Email I just got from NASA Mid-Ohio
Ladies and Gentlemen!
9 days from now we will be attending Mid Ohio Sports Car Course for thee days of fun! This email is meant to provide information about the event. Many of you have been receiving the Midwest and OH/IN Region emails that have covered most of this information. Early Bird registrants have already received a similar message. Here are some thoughts on the weekend:
We are not able to get into the track on Thursday night. However, participants for Friday may park trailers outside the track in the "General Spectator Gate" area.
Participants for the Mid Ohio event April 1-3 should take a moment to visit the Mid Ohio information page at www.racenasa.com . There participants will find the event schedule, supplemental information, and event tech forms. All participants must fill out a tech form and bring it with them to the event. Please read the below event information, as it has changed slightly from 2004. Instructors, please consider purchasing a chatterbox in car communicator to use with your students. It makes life much easier for both of you! Here is a link to a good price and package from our sponsor Forgeline: http://www.wheel1.com/shopping/DriverDetails.asp?searchType=driver&sub_cat_id=69
HPDE drivers: Bring your tech form and car to the tech area either at the hotel headquarters, The Quality Inn Belleville, Thursday night, or at the track (trackside of the middle garages, against the fence) for tech inspection. The tech inspector will sign your tech form, which you will then bring with you to the grid for the first session of the day. There the grid marshal will collect your tech form, and put a tech sticker on the drivers side of your windshield. Tech inspection must be completed before your first on track session. Registration should be visited at any time Thursday night at the hotel or at the track in garage 7 to pick up your event handout and any other information that is available. There will be a 7:45 HPDE drivers meeting each morning that is mandatory. After the drivers meeting, we will break into our HPDE groups, and the group leader will take roll and hand out group wrist bands (needed to get on track!).
Race Drivers: Bring your tech form, gear, log book (if the car has one), and race car (if the car DOES NOT have annual tech completed.) to the tech area either at the hotel headquarters, The Quality Inn Belleville, Thursday night, or at the track (trackside of the middle garages, against the fence) for annual tech inspection. The tech marshal will sign off in the logbook, or create a new log book for the car, and sign the tech form. Annual tech inspection must be completed prior to the first race of the weekend (Saturday afternoon). Race drivers may practice prior to completing annual inspection (due to a long inspection line, or other issue). A tech sticker will be put on the drivers side of the windshield once annual inspection is completed. Registration should be visited either Thursday night at the Hotel, or early morning at the track to receive the event handout, other information, and wrist band needed to get on the track. The mid-day drivers meetings on Saturday and Sunday are mandatory, and failure to attend will result in a minimum of starting at the back of the pack.
Tech and registration are open from 5:00 to dark Thursday night at the Host Hotel , then again all day Friday at the track, and Saturday morning at the track.
Other notes:
The race groups may be shuffled slightly to make sure they are about equal in # of cars, check the event schedule at www.racenasa.com this weekend for any changes.
Forgeline Wheels is the presenting sponsor for the event, and is providing all of the snacks, water, and picnic dinner Saturday night. Lots of give aways and raffles at this dinner as well!
www.forgeline.com
Racers acquiring provisional licenses at this event may pick them up at Race registration. This includes competition school participants, and others who have been in touch with the region and submitted the proper forms.
Registration is still open for the event. The following groups are full and closed: HPDE1, HPDE2, Competition School, Instructors, Garages. Late registration fees will go into effect this evening March 23rd at Midnight (extended one day). After this evening fees will go up $50 for 3 day entries, $40 for 2 day, and $30 for one day. Tell your friends!
Get in touch if you have any questions mansier@zoominternet.net . We can send out NASA stickers, patches, and even new NASA shirts prior to the event. This event is going to be a lot of fun!

That mixed group has the potential of being huge. There are 52 cars between HPDE3 & HPDE4, with 7 Porsches including a 996, a 911 turbo cab, and a GT3.
HPDE3 should be fun, 27 cars. Bill should have fun as well. He's got more cars to contend with in group 1, 35 in HPDE1 and 23 in HPDE2. It looks like he is going to be running in a mixed group with HPDE1 and HPDE2 all weekend.
Add in the Vipers and the Lotus Elises and it looks like some nice cars to run with. [B-)]

What is the best way to get to MidOhio? Does anyone plan to drive to the end of the PA turnpike, then go thru Akron?
This looks a little shorter than going thru Columbus.

Lexan windshield is in. Sparco Evo seat is in. New tires are mounted and balanced. My back is killing me but I think I'm about ready to go.
Ralph and I were talking and I believe the idea was to go through Akron and then west and down. Dave, we were planning on leaving early Thursday morning and making a pit stop at Breezewood.
Do you want to try to arrange a time or something to meet there and convoy the rest of the way out?

I won't be able to get out of here until 2-3 PM on Thursday, putting me @ Breezewood @ 3-4 PM or so. I'll probably follow the route you described, just later in the day.
No new mods here except for a passenger harness.

I think Mike has a good estimate of 8 hours. PA turnpike (I-76) into Ohio, follow I-76 past Akron to I-71 South to near Mansfield. Then it depends on where your hotel is. Do we want to meet at Wendy's, next to Koon's, at 8:00?

Hey Mike & Ralph,
Have a good time up at Mid-Ohio this coming weekend. Hope the weather's good for you guys.
I was down at VIR this past weekend with Andrej at the Mazda event. Had a great time. Loads of track time and some really fine, first class & fast automobiles there. It looked like a Corvette meet rather than a Mazda event.
Next time these guys hold an event, you might want to think about attending. The advanced group had some great drivers who like to "get with it" on the track. Lots of good head to head competitive driving with these guys.
My next event is the NASA event down at CMP the end of April. Between now and then I'm putting on a new X-Ram intake manifold, new 720 CFM throttle bodies and a new 45 PSI fuel pump. That should keep this old Crossfire running a lot stronger down the straights.
Let me know if anyone is heading down to CMP the end of the month.
Later - Jack -
Black396
03-29-2005, 03:48 PM
Hey Jack,
I'm not going to be able to make CMP. It sounds like you should have a blast though with the X-ram installed. I've never been there but from what I've heard it can be really fast.
NASA Virginia's next event is Shenandoah circuit at Summit and I'm not real interested in running the 'vette on it. My next event with NASA - VA will probably be the Hyperfest on the 16th and 17th of July on the main track at Summit.
The Mazda guys are running the Grand circuit at VIR on the 18th and 19th of June but I can't make that and be back in time and ready for our event on the 20th on Jefferson.
So unless I can sneak a FATT or Seat Time in between now and then, it looks like my next track event will be our HPDE in June.
Have a great time at CMP and good luck with the X-ram install.

Mid-Ohio is AWESUM! Kinda of short or it seems that way because you are constantly busy. It is a very technical track with a lot of camber changes (off camber turns), elevation changes, blind apexes, etc. It is also very fast.
Dave, Ralph and I had a blast on Friday. Ralph is going to post some pics from this morning so you can see why we came home early.
We got a good amount of track time in yesterday. Dave, Ralph and I all ran out of gas on the last run of the day. The fourth session was 'open', so Bill Linton got to run with us.
It was pretty Kool and he is going to be a good addition to the group. It was SUPPOSED to be passing only on the straights and only with a point by. That went out the window on the first lap. Bill hung in right in there. [=D>] He got some experience running three abreast on a straight.

The forcast changed on Friday to rain on Saturday morning changing to snow in the afternoon with 50mph gusts. What actually happened was rain Friday night that changed to sleet at about 3 am with 40 mph winds. That changed to snow with 30 mph winds at daybreak. I kept peeking out of my sleeping bag to look out the window and see if Mike and his tent were blown away! The first 50 miles of the return trip looked like demolition derby. We were going north but the southbound traffic didn't realize they were going from rain to slush and snow. SUVs were on their roofs and cars were spun out everywhere. I bet there were ten accicents in 5 miles!

I had it in 4 wheel drive for the first 20 miles from the track. Cars were scattered all over the highway. I guess we got some white knuckle driving in afterall on Saturday.
I knew I wouldn't drive on the track when I had trouble turning the car around in the parking lot, then barely got it onto the trailer without sliding sideways. As I left the complex, I noticed a yellow Evo on the straight after pit-out. I passed him, towing my trailer, at 30 mph. People on the track must have gotten a real educational experience.
I think I'll wait until later in the spring to go back to that track. There are still alot of changes I'd like to make to experiment on certain turns. There is more speed out there.

I JUST got here, sunday @ around 2:30-3:00
there was a major crash at the top of the mountains on 76 and I
ended up stuck there for nearly 3 hours while they cleared the
crash ( at least one semi and several cars) the traffic was backed
up so badly that when the radio announced that they had all

That last one almost makes Ralph's backend look like a C5. It does show off the negative camber he has.
I've noticed it before when I follow him with it on the trailer but always thought it was because he had it pulled down on the suspension.
My line in that second shot was really off. I didn't realize I was that far off the concrete patch for that turn. I would really like to see the video.
How many laps did you get of us playing "follow the leader"?

Glad to hear everyone got home safely, if not quickly. Dave thanks for the pics. It's always such a great time when we get to really run hard against one another. If we had a second day, I think we all could have done the right hander after the back straight, significantly faster. I think we all over-braked it. I really, really want to go back there soon. What a great track. Oh well, there's always next year!

I see the weather got even worse after I left. Decent accumulation if we were skiing.
Mike, I don't think your line was too far off in that turn. Initially it seemed like the faster line, as it doesn't throw you off to the right as much on exit. I eventually followed Ralph's line, which was the same as on the instruction video.
Ralph is right about us taking the right at the end of the straight a bit slower than necessary. Also we were very cautious before Thunder Valley. The racers were able to catch me and pass after that corner. I just have to build up to the point of finding out exactly how hard I can take it thru there without the rear of the car beating me thru the turn.
I only got 3 laps on tape (including the warm-up.) My battery then died. We only had about one lap where it was just the 3 of us driving our own lines. The first lap we all passed an integra as soon as it went green. The last lap I have is where we all got stuck behind the blue mini. That guy needs a bigger mirror.

There was alot of passing w/o point by's in the last session.
There where a few turns where I was forced to the outside
because of someone diving in and passing in the turn w/o
a point by. I have 3 gig of video left to sort through,
I'll try and get some more up tonight.

Like I said to Mike last night, where the heck were the black flags for that??? Were the officials asleep during the event or simply forget to bring them to work that day? [:))]
Great video...I can see that I'm gonna have a blast with all of this :yesnod:

It was an 'open' session with group 1-4, everyone was supposed
to run under group 1 rules, but after the first lap it became
wheel to wheel group 4 racing.

Yup, that's definitely a problem when mixing too many groups. I thought it was a good safe pass, even if he didn't get any point bys. Good lesson for everyone to keep you eyes on your mirrors to see what's going on around you.

The only way to have a safe HPDE is to be predictable, ie evey one follows the established rules.
!. The Porsche should not have been pasing. Shame on that driver. What else did that driver do that was irresponsible?
2. The Cobra should have been pointing by all the cars behind him/her way sooner than what was shown. Shame on that driver and the instructor in the car. (I don't know the track or where the passing zones were, but it seemed like a long time to be stuck behind that Cobra.)
Kudos to the drivers that waited patiently for the pass signal!
It sucks to be stuck in a train when the slow car is not giving passing signals. You should get off the track and complain to the event officials about the car that is not allowing passing, not make unsignalled passes. Passing without a signal is not being predictable, ie you don't know what else that driver is going to do.

I finally got to see this video. Bill, you have really progressed quickly. You hung on Mike pretty good, drove a good line and really handled some pretty tough track situations very well. Kudos for great judgement all the way around the track especially when you let that last red corvette get by you (oh yeh, that was me! '[:D]')
